Living in Port Vila: What to Expect When You Move to Vanuatu

Life in Port Vila: A Unique Pacific Experience

Port Vila is consistently ranked as one of the most liveable capitals in the Pacific. A small city of around 50,000 people, it offers a relaxed pace of life, a friendly and welcoming community, stunning natural surroundings, and an increasingly sophisticated range of restaurants, shops, and services. For those relocating from larger cities, the adjustment to island life is generally positive — and often life-changing in the best way.

Climate

Vanuatu enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, ranging from around 20°C in the cooler months (June–August) to 32°C or higher in the wet season (November–April). The wet season brings higher humidity and occasional heavy rain, and Vanuatu sits in a cyclone belt — so it’s important to ensure any home you rent or buy is well-constructed and properly insured. Most days, however, are sunny and beautiful.

Schools and Education

Port Vila has a number of good schooling options for expatriate families, including English, French, and bilingual curricula. The International School of Vanuatu offers an English-language curriculum for primary and secondary students and is well regarded by the expatriate community.

Healthcare

Port Vila has a central hospital and several private medical clinics. For specialist or complex medical care, many residents travel to Australia or New Zealand. Comprehensive international health insurance is strongly recommended for all residents.
